main task and planning questions

AS Media Foundation Portfolio – Self Assessment

Main task
Research
  • Which existing films did you research?
The existing films that we have researched are Rocky V, Rocky VI and Raging Bull.

  • Why did you choose them?
We chose these films as they are both well known and classic films, which have done well in their specific genre, and a good influence on our films choreography.

  • How did these films inform your planning?
These films both helped us with the planning as Raging Bull used the idea of black and white to create supposedly a little mystery and show that it is a classic film.  The Rocky films helped us with our film as they use suitable camera angles to help make the punches more realistic.

  • Did you analyse the films in terms of camerawork, mise-en-scene, editing and sound?
We analysed the Rocky films to gain confidence on our camera angles and shoot the right scenes in the right places making the fighting scenes seem as realistic as possible.  We edited our film making the whole of it black and white to make it seem like a gloomy film, filmed in the lower class areas.

  • Did you analyse the titles of the films?
WE did take a look at the way the titles were displayed within the two types of films, but we then decided to make them our own way and present them different to the two films.
  • Did you consider the conventions of your three films?
In the three films that we researched we looked at the conventions of them, in both the Rocky films we saw that within the fighting scenes there were flash images which made the punches seem powerful and make the audience feel the force of them.  In the first opening scenes of Rocky the title is splashed across the screen

  • Did you research the role of a film distributor?
We researched united artists which distributed the films that influenced our videos.

  • Did you find out which companies distributed your three influential films?
Yes the companies that influenced our films were United Artists.

  • Have you taken screenshots from the films to illustrate your analysis?
Yes we have done two screenshots from the rocky films to show the camera angles, and to understand the chorography in a still picture for example foot work and stances.

  • Have you found out who distributed your films, researched those companies and found out what films they typically distribute?
Yes we researched the distributing companies United Artists, they distributed Rain man, Annie Hall, Rocky, Midnight Cow Boy, In the heat of the night and Westside Story.

  • Did you use a focus group to give you feedback on your ideas and influential films?
We placed our video on youtube, blogger, twitter and on the whiteboard

  • How did this help you?
This helped us with our video; as we have learnt from the mistakes we have made and corrected all of are mistakes such as the amount of time the text stays on the screen and the choreography of the fighting.  Also it has helped us come up with new ideas to add into o0ur film.
  • Did you consider the audience for each of your existing films and how they target their audience?  (The films’ classifications may also be of use to you.)
Yes we did, as the audience of the films we chose to research was aged 18 and over and the type of audience that enjoys a action film and the sharp, snappy and flashing shots from different views when in the fighting scenes.
  • Have you used any other form of audience research, such as questionnaires and interviews?
The research and feed back we gained from our video was from our other class mates who gave comments and ideas about the good points and points that we could maybe improve on such as camera angles or scenery.
Planning:
  • Did you brainstorm your ideas?
Yes we did, we put them in a list of the things we were going to add into our film such as equipment, actors, actors role etc...

  • Have you created a shot list?
Yes i believe we have, such as the angles and shot angles on how we are going to shoot each shot in the film and from what distance to the actors we will shoot from.

  • Have you planned your titles based on your textual analysis?
Our titles were coming up during the film with a black background and white writing; we got that idea from the film Rocky.  We got the title itself from  million dollar baby as our film is called million dollar punch.

  • Have you created a simple call sheet for your actors?
We didn’t have a call sheet as it was a shirt film and wasn’t necessary to have one.
  • Did you complete risk assessments for any potentially dangerous activities?
Yes we did, some of the risks we included was the time of year as we filmed in the winter the temperatures were quite cold and we filmed in the garage which could of affected our performance from the cold weather.

  1. That's interesting to read, although there seems to be some questions missing to do with planning - e.g. 'Did you make a storyboard?'
