Written Evaluation Part 2

How did you attract/address your audience?

We attracted our audience by selecting the certain influential films to blend in with our feature film. We addressed our audience by stating the plot of our film before hand. We also, as a group made a video pitch of our main video, this therefore addressed the following demonstrate the features that will features of our film and our influential films. As 'Influential Films' are concerned, they therefore sate the common features in our film.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this project?

We have learnt during the process of the filming. As we have learnt that planning is a necessity and also allows us to understand the technical planning. When it came to the technical provisions, had a slight problem as we did not have the right camera equipment. So we then had to use a phone camera , but had a capacity of an HD quality. One  downfall to the camera work is that some videos were deleted due to unknown sources, but we eventually re-filmed and came up with better shots.  In a nut shell we used the software editor to a very good level, as it helped to correct some shots in many places. The software that we used was the MAC Movie, which was very good indeed. In some circumstances I personally wanted told do further editing with the film with some after effects. In terms of music we had trouble to record it as sometimes the timing would either be off or the recording  of the guitar would be off beat. But in the end we had a final composed piece for our film, and very much fitted with the overall film and gave us good feedback in terms of music.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the main task?

When looking back at preliminary film, it seems to be humorous in terms of how it was done and filmed as hardly no planning was involved therefore having a major an impact on how it was filmed. The editing of the film felt like it was alien to us which also had a profound effect upon our video. Another issue that crossed my mind when watching the preliminary video is that the plot was very badly written. In comparison to our main video it looked miles better than our first video that we did. In terms of camera work , editing, music, acting and location. This film was not humorous but taken seriously among the audience.

Remember to explain what your individual roles were within the group?

James Rose's role within this project was the camera man and the co-director. What James basically had to do was sort out the camera shots and organize the call outs of the actors, therefore sharing a call sheet for people who are next. Lee Arnold's role was the main actor, the 'antagonist' (the hero) . What he had to do was just act his role.Kieran Tyler's role was the 'Protagonist' of the film (the bad guy). What his role was to play the 'johnny stevenson' and fight 'jimmy sharmen' (Lee Arnold).Rudi Sampat's role was the Director and music producer. What Rudi had to do was take into consideration of the actors where abouts on the set and how it was filmed. When it came down to music, Rudi had to organize what music that was to be used in our film and compose it and record it.

Props/Equipment

Here is our first image of our props. As you can see here we have used ketchup to convey the blood and coke to give it the liquidy texture that is needed to show the realistic blood, and its easier to spit out.
Here is the end result of the Ketchup + coke.

Here are the hand wraps we are using in the fight sequence for the protectio and also for the costume design.
Here is the 'matress' where Lee Arnold will be using it to punch, in one of opening scenes that we did.

This is the treadmill that features in the training session of Kieran Tylers part.
This chai used at the very start of the film where Lee Arnold will be sitting down to show the opening.

Ths cloth is used to add the sweat feature to the actors to show the work force upon the characters.

The Guitar is used to make the theme of the film, which is fully composed throughout the film.

For lighting effects we used the video alsh of an iphone which actually worked very well than we expected.
The software that we used to edit the movie was Imovie for apple mac. The overall functions of the film editer was very good and provided alot of effects and equipment. The second software we used was Garageband for Mac, this me to add the music that we wanted to do. The overall functions of this wa svery good and showed consistent quality.

The equipment that we were able to access was a apple mac.We chose to do it on here as the software is already provided for us.

Main Film Pitch Feedback

1. How are we going to show and set a fight scene?
  • Use of dark background then light up a certain area to create a spotlight.
  • Use of decent location.
  • Important to other films, to get an expierience of how to set a fight scene.

2. How are you going to start the film?
  • We were thinking of starting the film with flasback of the fighting event, to show the story in a short view.
  • Have text, to brief the audiece on what is going to happen. But make sure the text is a suitable size and font.
  • Rather than have text have a voice over explaining what is about to happen, then opening scene shows 'the fight'.
3. How are we going to do the make- up?
  • Try to go on youtube. You can find make-up turtorials on there.
  • Group member know contacts for make-up artists.

§      The intro is simple, as in the camera shots and the where about of where it is being shot. Also no effects used, this shows simplicity.
§      Shows the name of actors at side of image/person, but not so standing out , mainly simple text.
§      The intro lasts for 2 minutes.
§      Generally showing main characters at the start of film.
§      Use of music to set the mood of the character and atmosphere.
§      3rd character shows person with cocaine, gives us hints of what the film is about.

§      Shows who funds the movie, and when it was funded.
Trainspotting-
§      Presents the main distributor at the start (Universal studies).

§      Character at the start shows him talking to the camera directly, as if he were talking to use, the audience.
§      Second camera shot was taken behind over two men’s shoulder’s (Double over shoulder shot); this is used as the camera is involving the audience as if the audience were sitting behind the two men.

§      2nd character is shown selling goods. This reveals their tone of voice and therefore the audience knows where he is from.

Preliminary Task Questions:

1. Does your film use continuity editing so that the sequence of events are clear and easily understood by the viewer?
Yes, some of the events are clear and therefore convey  sequence of relevence to wrds the audience at to put the idea across to them. But we have missed a few editing moments for our video.
2. Have you followed the directions in the brief? (A character opens a door, crosses a room and sits down in a chair opposite another character. An exchange of dialogue occurs.)
Overall we have followed the directions in the brief, but we have changed quite abit of our short movie. Our two characters that we used (Lee Arnold and Kieren Tyler) did exchange diolougue but at the start of the short movie.
3. Have you used match-on-action?
Yes we used the match-on-action when the main chrarcter (Lee Arnold) opes the door, also when he enters the room and shows him waliking to the chair and sits.
4. Can you explain what match-on-action involves?
Match on action means that when something happens in the scene. For example when the main character in our movie walks down the corridor, then the following match-on-action shot was when the actor enters the room and makes his way to the computer and sits down. This is an example of a consistent editing and it is very important in helping the audience continually understand exactly what s happening.
5. Have you used shot/reverse shot?
We have used shot/reverse shot when the main chracter walks up the corridor and then walks towards the camera, then the camera reverses the shot from behind the character.  Also we use this when both characters are exchanging diolougue, as the camera goes from both chracters point of view.
6. Can you explain what shot/reverse shot involves?
Shot reverse shot is a film technique where one character is shown looking at another character and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character shown. Since the characters are shown facing in opposite directions, this then gives the view of how both chracters are looking at eachother.
 7. Did you observe the 180-degree rule?
Overall yes we did. We observed the ‘180- degree rule’ when the main actor talking to the security Guard at the door.
 8. Can you explain the 180-degree rule?
The 180 degree rule is where you film a scene/dialogue and not to change side or moving in different way.
 9. What role did you play in the making of the preliminary task?  (e.g.  Filming, acting, editing, Equipment organization etc.)
In the preliminary task I took on several roles, such as: Filming, editing and directing. I took these roles on as I wanted to experience more than one role to see what I am good at.
10. How would you assess your contribution to the group?
To asses my contribution to the group, I think contributed quite a lot towards the group and the task that we do.
11. What have you learned from the process of making your preliminary film?
Overall I have learned that team work is acquired to film a movie, also I have realized that editing film isn’t easy as it seems. But everything that I have learned from this is that planning is the very important key in making a movie.

Preliminary ERRORS of the making of the video.

  • Script mistakes- Actors remembered abit but not all of it.
  • Camera shots were missed such as the Big Close (BCU).
  • During the making of the video people were in the background so we had to wait abit, so then we had little time to film.
  • Actors lauging/ Camera Crew aswell and background noise.
  • NOT all props were with us i.e. the sun glasses.
  • Pronunciation of the words in the script.
  • Some parts of the video were blurry and not in focus.
